If you want to play Minecraft as more than just Steve, you can change your skin and equip a cape at any time! Here are some steps to do so.
How to edit your Java skin
You can create your own skin based on either the Standard or Slim character models using the reference templates below:
Note: Slim-armed skins are only fully supported in version 1.8 and higher; if you have a slim-armed skin selected in a version prior, you will see black pixels on the arms.
After you download one of the image files above, edit it to your liking. You can also find other player-made skins on the internet.
How to change your Java skin from a browser
- Go to the Change Your Skin page in your Minecraft profile.
- Choose either the Classic or Slim model.
- Scroll down to Upload Custom Skin.
- Click Select File.
- Select the skin file you want to use.
- Select Upload.
How to change your Java skin from the Minecraft Launcher
- Open the Minecraft Launcher.
- Select Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Click the Skins tab.
- Select New Skin.
- Name your skin.
- Select whether it is a Wide or Slim model.
- Select Browse.
- Upload the skin file.
- Select Save & Use.
Add the skin to your library so you can go back to it quickly if you ever decide to change skins again.
How to equip a cape in Java Edition
- Start the Minecraft Launcher.
- Select the Skins tab in the Java section.
- Click either New Skin or hover over an already saved skin and click Duplicate.
- Hover over the new skin and select ... to get the menu.
- Select Edit from the pop-up menu and choose your cape.
- Click Save & Use.
