If you encounter an error when you update or open Minecraft: Java Edition, you may be able to fix the issue if you uninstall the game and manually remove all files.
We highly recommend you visit our Backup & Restore section before you uninstall and save your worlds, inventory, progress, and all other game data you want to keep. Minecraft support cannot recover any deleted files.
Manually uninstall Java Edition on Windows
Instructions to uninstall Windows programs are available at Uninstall or remove apps and programs in Windows on the Microsoft Support Site.
If you still need to delete saved worlds, screenshots, and other files, follow these steps:
- Select the Windows Key+R.
- Enter
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming - Select OK.
- Delete the .minecraft folder.
Manually uninstall Java Edition on macOS
To uninstall Minecraft, follow Apple’s instructions to Delete or uninstall apps on Mac; Minecraft is located in the Applications folder.
If you still need to delete saved worlds, screenshots, and other files, follow these steps:
- Open a Finder window.
- Select Shift+Command+G to open the Go to Folder dialog.
- Enter
~/Library/Application Support/ - Delete the Minecraft folder.
